First Major Acquisition of Aurora


Aurora Innovation Inc. which is a technological startup which is famous for the dream time founders made its first acquisition. The acquisition is with  a Lidar company which is based in Bozeman, Montana.

The company had raised $530million from some huge investors including the Sequoia Capital, Inc. and T. Rowe Price Group Inc. The company is acquiring Blackmore Sensors and Analytics-which is a Lidar startup raising funds from the BMW i ventures and Toyota At Ventures. However the terms have not been disclosed.

Lidar stands for Light detection and ranging which is a crucial technology as the leading automobile makers and tech companies have been racing to create fully automated cars. The system will be based on the use of lasers instead of radio waves. These lasers can build a three-dimensional image of the landscape in order for the vehicle to perceive the environment and predict the movement of other vehicles as well as pedestrians.

Aurora has offices located in Silicon Valley, San Francisco, Pittsburg and recently in Bozeman. The company has also announced that they will be partnering with Hyundai Motor Co, Volkswagen AG and Byton Limited to design software, hardware as well as data services to support the automobile makers. The company expressed it’s confidence in Lidar by saying that on the basis of years of experience, they are clear that Lidar along with Blackmore’s advancement will become the ultimate sensing system.

The co-founders of the company are experts in community of robotics and engineers who are developing self-driving cars. Urmson was the one who lead the driverless car project to Google that later on became Waymo. The Chief Product Officer- Sterling Anderson ran the autopilot team of Tesla, whereas the Uber’s Advanced Technologies Group was formed by the help of Chief Technology Officer Drew Bagnell.
